WindBorne Raises $15 Million to Scale Its Balloon Constellation and Bring AI Weather Modeling to the Fight Against Climate Change
WindBorne Systems, the world’s largest atmospheric sensing system and most accurate AI weather model, announced $15 million in Series A funding led by Khosla Ventures, which earlier led WindBorne’s pre-seed round in 2019 and will take a board seat. Existing investors Footwork VC, Pear VC, and Convective Capital also participated in the round.
The funding round comes three months after WindBorne unveiled its deep learning-based weather forecast model, named WeatherMesh, which has unseated Google DeepMind’s GraphCast as the most accurate medium-range global forecast model in the world. (WindBorne publishes real-time benchmarks for its model.)
“The emergence of generative AI and WindBorne’s AI-native tech stack will enable us to deliver a new, smarter kind of weather experience that’s bespoke and co-creative in ways that software has never been before,” said Kai Marshland, WindBorne co-founder and Chief Product Officer. “The ability to cost-effectively deliver these insights across any industry and company presents an enormous opportunity to not only reduce emissions through smarter energy use, but also to help every community better adapt to the extreme weather that’s intensifying in the wake of climate change.”

WindBorne Breaks World Record for Most Accurate Global Weather Forecasts with New AI Forecast Offering, “WeatherMesh”
WindBorne’s groundbreaking deep learning model delivers real-time, medium-range global weather forecasts, surpassing previous state-of-the-art records. The model now powers the company’s constellation of smart, long-duration sensing balloons.WindBorne Systems, the environmental and weather intelligence company behind the only constellation of autonomous, long-duration sensing balloons, announced its record-breaking AI forecasting model, named WeatherMesh. The new weather model now generates the most accurate global weather forecasts through innovative deep learning and data techniques.
WeatherMesh, a deep learning numerical weather prediction (DLNWP) model, has reached unprecedented levels of global prediction accuracy for real-time, 24-hour forecasts, surpassing records previously held by Google DeepMind’s AI weather model, GraphCast. WindBorne’s state-of-the art model surpassed GraphCast by a significant 11% margin in accurately predicting a primary forecasting metric, 500 millibar geopotential height. This measure of pressure describes the movement of weather systems, evaluated at 0.25-degree resolution. The model also surpassed the gold-standard for traditional physics-based weather modeling, known as numerical weather prediction (NWP), held by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF)’s medium-range model (ENS). WeatherMesh outperformed ENS by 6%-14% for five-day forecasts in ensemble mean.
